ArtHatch and Distinction Gallery are excited to present a compelling new show featuring the stunning work of San Francisco artist Jenn Porreca, entitled “Crossing the Divide ". Drawing inspiration from the repetitive religious iconography of her childhood, European silhouette and folklore artists of the early 1900s, literature, San Francisco Street Art, Manga, and Japonisme, Porreca creates a delicate and intricately layered world. Jenn Porreca will be present for a meet and greet during the evening of the reception. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2011 from 6-10pm with Live Music, complimentary Stone Brewery Beer and wine for guests 21 years of age or older.
This body of work is a culmination of years of experiences, memories and triggers to what ultimately is a bridge to freedom for Porreca both as a woman and as an artist. It includes mixed media works with pencil, acrylic and oil, and a handful of original sketches. It also includes copper plate etchings completed with master printmaker, Struan Hamilton of Belfast Print Workshop in 2009, along with the artist proofs which have never been shown before. Porreca’s work portrays the challenges of crossing racial, familial and cultural divides in her life in San Francisco and fragments of her war torn British family and now my extended family in the Philippines. Porreca’s creative process continues to be one of self discovery which informs her work. This has been a three year process of building bridges with myself, my family's past, and the future ahead. This show concludes works ranging from 2009 - 2012.
The exhibition will be held from April 14 – May 5, 2012
