The Canadian Club of Houston is presenting a Cross Border Tax & Investments Forum for members, guests, and interested parties. The focus of this event will be to inform participants about issues related to investments in Canada and the U.S., with emphasis on financial planning for these assets with regard to the unique circumstances that Canadians living in the U.S find themselves in. Issues related to moving to or from the U.S.... and the impact on RRSP, RESP, IRA, 401(k), and individual type accounts will be discussed.
Seminar Overview — Common Crossborder Issues
- Taxation of Asset Dispositions in Canada and the US.
- Transfer of pension credits to/from Canada, as well as transfer of IRAs to RRSPs.
- Coordinating tax, investment, estate & relocation planning.
- Managing crossborder currency risk and investment accounts, RRSPs for expats.
- Impact of US estate taxes on dual citizens.
- Use of domestic and non-resident trusts to mitigate tax burdens.
- Implementing foreign tax credits, qualified stock options, and a return to the USA.
- New legislation and amendments to the Canada/USA tax treaty.
- Fulfilling US reporting requirements (e.g. FBAR)
The Forum will be a panel discussion, led by distinguished guests Paul Bains, CFP and Naveen Gopal from Pacifica Partners Capital Management of Vancouver, B.C. Tobias J.W. McFaul, CPA of Weinstein Spira & Company, P.C. will lead the Income Tax discussion, and Brett T. Berly, JD of Chamberlain, Hrdlicka, White, Williams & Martin will lead the Estate Tax discussion.
