About the Croatoan Archaeological Society:
Founded by Native Hatteras Islander, Scott Dawson, whose geneaological roots to Croatoan go deeper than any shovel could ever reach. Their Mission: Our primary mission is to gain as much knowledge as possible about the past history of Croatoan, or modern-day Hatteras Island, and the people that inhabited said island, through the scientific methods of archaeology, while keeping it our utmost priority to protect the native people and property owners of Hatteras Island by serving as a conduit or steering committee for archaeological work done on Hatteras Island and ensuring that all artifacts found on Hatteras Island stay on Hatteras Island, except in situations where the state laws require that artifacts must go to the state . It is also our mission to be the ultimate resource for locals and outsiders in regards to archaeological work done on Hatteras Island. We are here to serve and protect the interests of the native people and the interests of the island in regards to archaeological work. (In the past, local and native people have had personal family heirlooms and artifacts taken off this island to never be seen again, and we are here to hopefully prevent that from ever happening again.)
