Creating a Handful of Odes and other Book Arts Adventures April 23, 2007

When artist Jennifer Van de Pol began a series of ink drawings with watercolour washes during an artist-in-residence invitation to Sweden last summer, she knew that they would one day form a book. Inspired by the work, she spent the fall of 2006 creating what can truly be called an artist’s book - a book conceived and created (almost) entirely by the artist’s own hand.

A graduate of Emily Carr, Jen’s background and work have focused primarily on painting; her foray into the world of books required her to experiment with printing techniques to reproduce the original drawings, and various formats and binding options. Her solution resulted in an edition of 15 copies, each one uniform in content but unique due to the extensive hand embellishment in each copy (including a fully painted wrapper). Jen will discuss both the technical issues that she worked through in creating “A Handful of Odes”, and the artistic issues encompassed in all the aspects of creating a book.
