The wonderful works of art by the courageous children of Litewska are well known throughout Warsaw, Poland. The joyful drawings are bright, colorful and full of life-guaranteed to bring a smile. Luzerne County Community College is able to mount this US exhibit through the efforts of Thomas E. Pugh, Senior Vice President of Allied Services, John Heinz Institute. The Institute has provided training for Polish nurses and has sent nurses to Litewska Hospital to teach.
The 350-bed children's hospital on Litewska Street was built before World War II and has struggled through the years to upgrade and improve its facilities. It treats children with the most serious medical conditions including cancer, kidney, and heart disease. Because the hospital stay for so many children is almost a year, the hospital has a fully functioning school with an art department that has a distinguished reputation. The art is therapeutic as well as recreational and provides the children with some relief from their daily medical treatments.
The exhibit will be on display throughout the holidays until January 23, 2009. The Exhibit is open to the public free of charge.
