You can always identify the Cowboy Junkies by the unmistakable vocals of Margo Timmins. Her dusky, haunting voice is a focal point in the band’s hypnotic blues-tinged balladry. Cowboy Junkies’ music blends alt-country and folk with the languid haze of the Velvet Underground. So it was fitting that one of their first hits would be a cover of the Velvet Underground classic “Sweet Jane.” Three of the band's members - singer Margo; songwriter, producer and guitarist Michael; and drummer Peter - are siblings, and bassist Alan Anton has been a member since the group formed in Toronto in 1985. Few bands have lasted nearly as long with their original line-up intact, and fewer still have created as consistently satisfying a body of work. Cowboy Junkies newest album, “Renmin Park”, was released earlier this month. It was inspired by Michael Timmins’s trip to China.
