At 20,000 gallons and more than 18 feet deep, Steinhart's new coral reef aquarium is one of the largest live coral exhibits in the country and the deepest coral reef tank ever undertaken in this hemisphere. The tank is filled with over 5,000 pounds of live rock and hundreds of living coral colonies. This tank is an experimental prototype of the new coral reef exhibit being built in Golden Gate Park. It is helping Steinhart biologists develop successful husbandry techniques, incorporate the latest technology, and grow the aquarium's collection for the new facilities.
