Cook Children's SPORTS Symposium June 24, 2009

Join us for the Cook Children’s SPORTS symposium to learn what all coaches and athletic trainers need to know about young athletes.

After this educational activity, participants will be able to:

- Describe how asthma, diabetes and cardiac disease affect the young athlete during physical activities.
- Respond to concussions, cervical spine injuries, fractures and heat illness/dehydration in young athletes.
- Know how to prevent common overuse injuries/apophyseal injuries in young athletes.
- Provide guidance on how to properly strength train young athletes.
- Summarize how proper nutrition and dietary stimulants affect young athletes.
- Recognize the importance of good mental health for young athletes.

Who should attend the SPORTS symposium?

Focusing on young athletes, the SPORTS symposium is designed for coaches (from elementary through high schools, community recreation centers and select sports teams), gymnastic trainers, dance instructors and physical education teachers. The symposium will also benefit athletic trainers and physical therapists who want to learn more about caring for young athletes.

Teaching Method

The primary educational method is a lecture format. Continuing Education Credits Applications for continuing education credits from the Texas Physical Therapy Association and the National Athletic Trainers’ Association for 6 contact hours are in process.
