"North African and Near Eastern Music"

This trio of voice, sound and percussion explores the role of Jews in the musical culture of the Arab and Muslim world with emphasis on North Africa. The trio of Rachel Valfer, John Erlich and Faisal Zedan are members of the Berkeley-based ensemble Za'atar, North America's only band featuring the music of the Jews of Near East and North Africa preformed in traditional style and instrumentation. Their music explores the culture of the Jews of Arab and Muslim lands and highlights the shared cultural realms between Jews and Arabs, and among Jews, Christians, and Muslims of the Near East. The CONVERSATION will include a brief lecture, discussion and performed musical examples.
