A staple of art throughout the centuries, portraiture provides uncommon insight into the lives of people past and present. Face to Face presents diverse approaches to the subject by 20 artists from the Renaissance to the present. They capture the inner psyche as well as the outward appearance of their subjects in a wide arrange of styles and media, including paintings, sculptures, photography and video works. Among the artists included are Mary Cassatt, George Bellows, Romare Bearden, Stephan Balkenhol, Tina Barney, and Ann Hamilton. Presented side-by-side, these historic and contemporary works express a wide spectrum of figuration.
