Hardwood charcoal was an essential ingredient in the production of iron throughout the early days of this region's past. This "baked" wood was also used in local blacksmith shops as a fuel to heat metals in order to shape useable items. Today we will be constructing a small scale charcoal pit on the farm. Once lit, it will burn for twelve days producing high quality charcoal.
