Explore the traditional rhythms in the Afro-Cuban: Folkloric tradition. With lots of time provided for playing, participants will receive instruction in technique and sound production. Lecture and discussion will take place on the cultural context of the music, including its use in folkloric and religious settings. Time will also be spent discussing the influence and use of these traditional rhythms in contemporary American music by artists like Paul Simon, Wyclef Jean and David Byrne.
