The New School's Center for Public Scholarship is pleased to present the 28th Social Research conference, Giving: Caring for the Needs of Strangers, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, December 6, 7, and 8, 2012 at The New School in New York City.
The conference is intended to be broadly inclusive, ranging from individual philanthropy, volunteering, and faith-based giving, to state social welfare programs designed to reduce the suffering of citizens, to international giving. Our speakers—scholars, professionals, and philanthropists—will deepen our understanding of why we do and should give to others, what the roots of altruism are, how we can instill generosity in our young people, what the religious and philosophical grounds for caring and giving to others are, and what the correct balance between private philanthropy and government welfare programs may be.
All proceedings will be published in a future issue of Social Research: An International Quarterly. (Order in advance at the special conference price of $15 per copy). Find details about the conference on our tickets page.
The Social Research conference director and founder (1988) is Arien Mack, Alfred and Monette Marrow Professor of Psychology at The New School for Social Research and editor of Social Research since 1970.
