This Saturday: Coney Island Films! A delightful collection of classic and contemporary short films, all shot on location at Coney Island. This special screening will feature selections from the 2003 Coney Island Film Festival.
Coney Island(1939)09:00. A breezy newsreel from legendary producer William Castle extoles the endless pleasures of Pre-WWII Coney Island.
Curly Oxide: Welcome to the Millennium - Chris Cassidy - music video 03:46. A 6' 8" Hasidic man wandered into the Right Bank Café (Williamsburg, Brooklyn) one evening in December of '99 while Vic Thrill and The Rev. Vince Anderson were nearly destroying the place in a performance. He was very taken by the show and wound up hanging around The Vic Thrill Salon, where he addictively watched 6 hours of MTV a day. The combination of being brought up in such an insular community with his only portal to the mainstream through MTV, created a sort of a Hasidic Rock & Roll Chauncey Gardner. Curly Oxide is a true "larger then life" character, expressing himself beyond the breakwater of irony.
Poor Man?s Mermaid - Stefanie Koseff- drama 07:53. An eerie twist on a traditional mermaid tale. An old man?s life-long obsession is revealed through fragmented narration and images that merge his fantasies, memories and reality.
Shorty At Coney Island(1939)10:00. An inquisitive young chimp spends the day exploring the delights of Steeplechase Park.
Pinky - Ted Bourne - experimental 03:39. 'Pinky' places an endearing incarnation of Fellini's Gelsomina into a stop-motion animation. With only two dollars in her purse, our pink-haired heroine's search for the right food takes her through New York City to Coney Island, where the surprises begin.
Common Cause - Asako Aiba - drama 10:00. A Japanese immigrant and a homeless man find they have something in common after all.
Carnival(1942)08:00. Produced for a young audience, this short film takes kids on a tour of an unidentified amusement park that just happens to be Coney Island. 8 minutes.
Coney Island Alligator Hunter - Eric P. Sharkey - comedy 02:30. Famed alligator hunter Petula McGee (Carrie Progen) is on a mission to find the elusive Coney Island alligator. Luckily the only thing she needs is beer and plenty of it.
The Third Date - Amy Barrett - comedy 16:29. It may only be the third date, but Tony plans to ask Katrina to be his wife. And what more romantic place than Coney Island? Starring Sarah Clarke (24), Neil Jain, Sandra Bernhard (The King Of Comedy) and Xander Berkeley (24, Safe).
Coney Island USA(1954)20:00. One of the very best Coney Island films. The dawn to dusk activity of one glorious summer day at Coney.
Next Saturday there will not be a screening so that we can all party at The 22nd Annual Mermaid Parade where Moby and Theo(from The Lunachicks)will rule as King and Queen! Then at 8pm it's The Mermaid Ball at one of my favorite Coney Island Establishments, Peggy O'Neill's at Keyspan Park, home of The Brooklyn Cyclones! Support The Parade! March in it. Buy a cap! Buy a Poster! Buy an 'official' T shirt. Buy a Program. Buy a Merm-Aid Pin. See The Sideshow. Have a drink at The Sideshow's Freak Bar. Support the people who make it happen for you, the non profit arts group, Coney Island USA. http://www.coneyisland.com/mermaid.shtml
