Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra to Give Concert at Carleton

Northfield, Minn.?The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra (SPCO), directed by conductor and pianist Stephen Prutsman, will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20, in the Carleton College Skinner Memorial Chapel. The event is free with a Carleton or St. Olaf College I.D. Public admission will be $10 for adults and $7 for senior citizens and non-Carleton/St. Olaf students. Tickets are available only at the door on the night of the performance.

The concert will feature Henze?s Adagio from ?Quintetto for Piano and Strings,? Dvorak?s ?Wind Serenade in D Minor,? opus 44, and Brahms?s ?Piano Quintet in F Minor,? opus 34, arranged for string orchestra.

Prutsman, a critically-acclaimed pianist, composer, arranger and conductor, recently was chosen as Artistic Partner for the SPCO. He has performed with major orchestras throughout the world, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Minnesota Orchestra and the Colorado, Baltimore, Detroit, Dallas, Houston, San Francisco and Seattle Symphonies.

In Europe, Prutsman has performed with the Belgian National Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, and the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra, among others. Time Out New York recently called his recording of Barber?s Piano Concerto as ?breathtaking? while the The New York Times has called his performance ?an evening of exceptional musicianship.?

In the early 1990s, Prutsman was awarded top honors at the Tchaikovsky and Queen Elisabeth competitions and received an Avery Fisher Career Grant. His compositions have been performed by musicians such as Dawn Upshaw, Leon Fleisher and Yo-Yo Ma, while his arrangements were featured on the Kronos Quartet?s 2003 Grammy-nominated CD, titled ?Nuevo.? As a founding member of the trio Nobilis and the founder of the El Paso Chamber Music Festival, Prutsman frequently performs with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and at Music from Marlboro. He has studied at the University of California at Los Angeles and the Peabody Conservatory of Music.

The SPCO, now in its 47th season, is the nation?s only full-time professional chamber orchestra and is widely regarded as one of the finest chamber orchestras in the world.
