For more than 20 years, the Northwoods Improvisers have been making wonderful music that resists easy classification. In the 1980s, the group performed a type of improvised jazz that utilized scales and forms of other musical cultures to explore a genre that would eventually be tagged "world music." As the music morphed into eastern forms, the group began performing exclusively on acoustic instruments, most notably exotic ones from the Orient and Middle East.
The band consists of six members: Faruq Z. Bey (tenor, alto, soprano saxophone, flute), Mike Carey (tenor saxophone, flute, bass clarinet), Skeeter C. R. Shelton (tenor and soprano saxophones, oboe, basoon), Mike Gilmore (vibraphones, marimba, cheng, guitar, saz, percussion), Mike Johnston (bass, wood flutes, percussion), Nick Ashton (drums, percussion).
