Concert: Music from North India October 21, 2005

Rajeev Taranath, internationally recognized sarod instrumentalist, and Abhiman Kaushal, tabla, will present a concert of classical music from northern India on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 8 p.m. in the Carleton College Concert Hall. The event is free and open to the public

The sarod, a traditional North Indian musical instrument, is a lyrical relative of the lute and is smaller than a sitar. Reviewers have said Taranath?s performances are marked by intensely passionate emotion. ?[His] sarod improvisations mixed the spiritual and the spirited...raga began with introspective meditation and proceeded into an exuberant rhythmic celebration? commented Edward Rothstein of The New York Times.

Taranath has been recognized internationally and in his home country, where he received India's highest government award in the arts for outstanding achievement in Hindustani classical instrumental music in 1999. Taranath currently serves on the world music faculty at the California Institute of the Arts.

Kaushal continues the rich tradition of tabla, a North Indian percussion instrument, passed down from the masters with whom he has trained. He has performed internationally and has been featured on the soundtrack of National Geographic?s ?Man Eaters of North India.?
