Concert: Laura Caviani Jazz Trio January 15, 2006

The Laura Caviani Trio will bring original jazz music to Northfield with a concert Sunday, Jan. 15 at 3 p.m. in the Carleton College Concert Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

The concert celebrates the release of Caviani?s compact disc ?Going There,? the fifth release for the Carleton adjunct instructor in jazz piano, who also is one of the Twin Cities? most in-demand pianists. The CD features nine original compositions and a cover of ?Finlandia,? by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius.

Veteran players Bob Bowman (bass) and Todd Straight (drums) back Caviani on the CD and will do so at the concert. Her long-standing association with them is evident on the CD. Andrea Canter of JazzPolice.com notes that ?the interactions among the musicians fall somewhere between telepathy and mutual admiration.?

Caviani joined noted musician Karen Allyson on the 2004 and 2005 Concord Jazz Festival tours, where she also accompanied Oleta Adams, Diane Schuur and Sara Gazarek. Other jazz luminaries with whom Caviani has performed include Toots Thielemans, Stan Getz, Bob Mintzer and Dave Liebman.

Based in Kansas City, Bowman toured with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra and the Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big Band in the 1970s. He has toured internationally with Carmen McRae and gigged with Bud Shank and Freddie Hubbard.

Portland-based Strait has kept the beat for Marian McPartland and Tal Farlow, among others.
