Carleton students, working with the Acting in the Community Together (ACT) center on campus, will sponsor a Hurricane Katrina Relief Concert on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 2 to 6 p.m. on the Carleton College bald spot, located behind Skinner Memorial Chapel. All proceeds will go to the American Red Cross. The event is free and open to the public and donations are strongly encouraged.
The concert will feature local and Twin Cities bands as well as other Carleton and community performers. The bands scheduled to appear include The Exiles (2-2:30 p.m.), Living Spoon (2:45 to 3:35 p.m.), student band Shaker Revival (3:45-4:35 p.m.) and Kubla Khan (4:45-6:00 p.m.).
Various student and Northfield community organizations will sponsor booths to sell food, run games and activities and distribute information related to the disaster. Booths will include face-painting, raffle drawings and sign-ups for information about a potential trip to the Gulf Coast to help directly with relief efforts.
The ACT program Activating World Awareness and REsponse (AWARE) is organizing the event, in conjunction with the Carleton Student Senate and multiple groups on campus. AWARE was created last winter after the Southeast Asia tsunami disaster to provide sustainable response to world disasters and raise awareness of such events on campus.
