Concert: Carleton Symphony Orchestra May 27, 2005

The Carleton College Orchestra, directed by Hector Valdivia, associate professor of music and the S. Eugene Bailey Director of the Orchestra, will give a concert at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 27, at Carleton College?s Concert Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

The program will include two opera preludes by Giuseppe Verdi and Beethoven?s Symphony No. 1 in C major. The concert also will feature the winners of Carleton?s Concerto Competition. Senior Clemence Sullivan of Prairie Du Sac, Wis., will perform the allegro movement of Mozart?s Flute Concerto in D major and senior Collin Thomas of Burlingame, Calif., will perform Felix Mendelssohn?s Capriccio Brillant in B minor on piano.

Valdivia coordinates Carleton?s string and chamber music programs. As the founder of and violinist for the Veblen Trio, he has studied with Sidney Harth, Otto-Werner Mueller and Tyrone Greive. A chamber musician and an active recitalist, he has served as concertmaster of the Williamsport Symphony, the Washington-Idaho Symphony and has been the guest conductor of several all-state orchestra festivals in Washington, Pennsylvania and New York. His research interests include the music of Eugene Ysaye, Luisa Adolpha Le Beau and Amy Beach. Valdivia has recorded Amy Beach?s ?Variations on Balkan Themes? with the Moravian Philharmonic in Olomouc, Czech Republic. He also has recorded numerous works by Carleton?s composer-in-residence, Philip Rhodes. Valdivia received his B.Mus. from the University of Wisconsin and his M.M.A., M.M. and D.M.A. from the Yale School of Music.
