Nancy Heller, Professor at the University of the Arts, examines a variety of paintings of female flamenco dancers by such illustrious American artists as Robert Henri, William Merritt Chase, and John Singer Sargent. Comparisons of these visual artworks with each other, comparable examples by Spanish painters, and photographs of flamenco in the late 19th/early 20th centuries will show how accurate the canvases are and how much they were influenced by popular stereotypes of “La Gitana.” A demonstration of castanets, fans, and flamenco shoes, plus a short video clip, will be included.
