Communicating isn’t always easy. The other person may react with defensiveness, criticism, or advice, and it can escalate into an argument. Sometimes it’s hard to know what you are really arguing about.
NVC helps you name the real issues and address them effectively. The real issues are universal: love, respect, understanding, being heard, caring, collaboration, trust, and intimacy, to name a few. “You never listen to me!” could be more directly communicated, “Hearing you give me advice, I feel frustrated because I want to be heard. Would you be willing to tell me what you are hearing me say, instead of giving me advice?”
In this series you will get an introduction to Compassionate Communication, also called Nonviolent Communication (NVC), as founded by Marshall Rosenberg. Each class will present a skill, offer practice in pairs or groups, and then review by the whole group for integration and questions.
