"Come and Get It" - Dallas Derby Devils 2009 Season Opener April 18, 2009

The Dallas Derby Devils proudly present the first bout of the 2009 season, Saturday, April 18th. For the first course on the season opener “menu”, 2008 season undefeated champions, the Slaughterers will play against the ladies of the “green mile”, the Death Row Rumblers. The second course will prove to be just as “tasty” with the hard working gals of the Wrecking Crew going head to head with the swashbuckling antics of the High Seas Hotties. Will the Slaughterers stay true to their name and make minced meat pie out of the Death Row Rumblers? Can the Wrecking Crew take the “heat” from the High Seas Hotties or will they have to get out of the kitchen? The Devils are serving it up steaming hot and want you to “Come and Get it” for the 2009 season! This is your chance to see the action first hand and to find out your Devils fate.

The competition will take place at NYTEX Sports Centre (8851 Ice House Road, North Richland Hills). Doors open at 7:00pm and the action will start at 7:30pm. The 2008 season opener hosted 1400 Dallas roller derby fans! Get there early if you want a trackside seat but don’t forget to BYOC (bring your own chair)! The bleachers will be open, so there will be plenty of room! The Devils expect another capacity crowd. This bout will sell-out, so get your tickets to this PG-13 event in advance for only $12 if purchased from your favorite derby girl or $13 on our website through Pay-Pal. If available, tickets at the door will be $15. Kids 12 and under are free if you choose to bring them. Since the regular season bouts are held at NYTEX, these bouts will NOT be BYOB but thanks to sponsor ZuRoma Sicilian Kitchen, enjoy the newest gift to the fans, $1.00 “derby draft” beers and $1.50 select cans from trackside. You can’t buy a good six-pack for any cheaper than that!

In other news, the Dallas Derby Devils are under new management! The league boasts a new attitude worth celebrating. They are still “skater owned and operated” but more skaters have stepped up to take the reins, so you can be assured of the same great sporting action. To go with the new business structure, DDD has launched a new Web site, so make sure you update your bookmarks to www.derbydevils.com.

When not at practice, the Devils continue the business of promoting and growing the league across North Texas. Clearly, DDD discovered a formula for success and are becoming stronger every season, heading into their fifth year of existence. The league is the largest of its kind, boasting the largest roster of active skaters—nearly 100 at last count—in the country. Volunteers are welcome. Security, production help, water boys, and ticket takers are a just few of the open positions. The league’s sponsorship drive remains underway to defray the league’s operating costs. Sponsors get bragging rights about being part of the derby revival at a ground level as they help the Dallas Derby Devils support worthy causes; a portion of all proceeds are donated to local charities.

The Devils chose Parkland Memorial Hospital’s Camp I-Thonka-Chi as their April benefactor. In 1991, the employees of Parkland Health and Hospital System proposed a plan that would allow children who had been hospitalized with burn injuries an opportunity to share time with others who face similar life-altering challenges. This time would be spent in a positive environment where new friends are made and a new level of acceptance would be realized. Thus, Camp I-Thonka-Chi was born. The annual burn camp sponsored by Parkland Memorial Hospital is among approximately 32 such camps nationwide which are designed to address issues specific to burn injuries. The camp is an opportunity for children and teens to interact with others who have been burned. This increases self-esteem through confidence-building activities with people who accept them for who they are. Being burned is devastating not only physically but psychologically as well.
