The Luggage Store Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition “Come Across,” curated by Christina Linden as a part of the Luggage Store’s “Shortcuts Program” for emerging curators. This exhibition presents San Francisco with an opportunity to see work by two young artists from Berlin, Germany. A film by Amy Patton will be shown along with a video and sound piece and an interactive sculptural installation by Gaëlle Boucand.
Both artists meticulously craft moving image and sound that looks as if it were a half-forgotten and unexplained relic from another time, to be rediscovered by the viewer. The embedded narratives, whether dictated or implied, leave gaps and missing information. Like the experience we might have if we came across a handsome but somewhat dusty and completely unlabeled apparatus in a storeroom, these intriguing but somewhat mystifying works don't come with instructions. We are left to fill in the missing gaps with our own imaginations.
The exhibition will present Gäelle's Boucand’s video "Berliner Bildstörung” along with the sculpture "KEVO 2" The video is comprised of images taken at west Berlin's Zoologischer Garten zoo, but empty of people and animals the spaces we are shown seem deserted. The soundtrack combines white noise and intermittent animal sounds. The juxtaposition between the empty scenery and the broken noise creates a strange, dated tension. "KEVO 2" uses a microfiche reader to display 200 pictures from inside an abandoned scientific research lab in Finland; an outdated archival method is used to preserve the archives of a defunct research station.
In "Chronicle of a Demise," Amy Patton uses what she describes as “doubtful, untrustworthy narrative voices” and “invisible, unnamed protagonists” to construct an uncommon relationship between image and narrative. The footage seems old and tampered-with. Patton shot her own "found footage" on a Bolex in Hamburg, East Berlin's Tierpark zoo, and Hutto, Texas.
