Columbia College Chicago to host screening of The Return of Navajo Boy navajoboy.com, an award-winning documentary from 2000, which was an official selection of the Sundance Film Festival and PBS, and triggered a federal investigation into uranium contamination on Navajo land.
The original film and a recently added epilogue will be screened followed by a discussion with Los Angeles Times' Judy Pasternak. Pasternak reported on the issue since the film premiered, and her recently published book, Yellow Dirt: An American Story of a Poisoned Land and a People Betrayed is a terrific compliment to the film. judypasternak.com
The panel discussion of the film will also include director Jeff Spitz, associate professor in Columbia College’s film & video department and Mary Helen Begay, a Navajo activist who will share her efforts to film webisodes of the EPA’s clean-up.
The discussion takes place during National Native American History Month to call attention to the continuing plight of Navajo’s search for social justice in the United States, especially critical now as policy decisions are under consideration regarding our nation’s energy policy.
