Colour Box is the children’s strand of Flatpack Festival, Birmingham’s annual festival of film and so much more! Flatpack Festival takes place from 23-28 March in venues across the city.
The majority of screenings are particularly suitable for ages 7 and upwards.
Events include:
Colour Box Shorts
Sat 27 March, 11am
Certificate: PG
A selection of inventive animated films which starts off with a food theme. Birthday cakes, sleepy cats, a crazy version of Rapunzel, witches and spooky woodland magic.
How to animate your own vegetable
Sat 27 March, 1.30pm
Suitable for ages 7-12
Andy Wyatt has worked films and TV shows from Teenage Ninja Turtles to Grizzly Tales for Gruesome Kids. Most recently he was Animation Supervisor on the CBBC series OOglies. He will be showing children how to animate their own vegetable.
The 5,000 Fingers of DR. T
Sun 28 March, 3pm
Certificate: PG
The only feature film written by Theodor Geisel (better known as Dr. Seuss), this hyper-coloured fantasy musical looks a little like The Wizard of Oz might have done if Salvador Dali had designed it. Surreal fun.
The Secret of Kells
Sun 28 March, 1pm
Certificate: PG
Stunning Oscar nominated animation about how the sacred text was completed and survived to become one of Ireland’s national treasures; with animation which is nearly as beautiful as the book itself.
Other screenings during the festival suitable for children include the classic Buster Keaton film The Cameraman with live piano accompaniment and Puppetoons, films from the 1930s/40s by Hungarian animator George Pal.
