Using the Power of Hip-Hop Dance to
Promote HIV/AIDS Awareness
(Los Angeles, CA ? March 1, 2006) Culture Shock Los Angeles, L.A.?s premier nonprofit hip-hop dance company, will present ?The Color of We,? on April 23rd at the Marsee Auditorium in Torrance. This progressive dance production uses urban art forms to promote HIV/AIDS awareness, with a portion of the evening?s proceeds going to benefit the HIV/AIDS department of the South Bay Family Healthcare Clinic.
The production?s first act highlights the work of emerging dance companies including the Groovaloos,
Jabbawockies, and Creative Planet. The show?s second half features the premiere of Culture Shock Los Angeles? original composition, The Color of We. Inspired by the real lives of seven L.A. locals living with HIV/AIDS, the 45-minute piece uses music, spoken word, and dance to bring their stories to the stage.
The work explores the turmoil of their emotional journeys, examines the consequences of their decisions, and emphasizes the ultimate non-discriminatory nature of the HIV virus.
The Color of We represents a true collaboration of local artists. The piece includes the music, spoken word, and choreography of talented contributors like DJ Enerjon, Culture Shock San Diego, and the San Pedro City Ballet. It is hoped that the evening?s performance will enlighten audiences to the issues facing those affected by HIV/AIDS, and empower viewers to make a positive difference in their communities.
The Color of We begins at 7:30pm on Sunday, April 23rd at the Marsee Auditorium located at 16007
Crenshaw Blvd in Torrance. Doors open at 6:30pm; informational material will be provided by local
HIV/AIDS service organizations in the lobby. Pre-sale tickets are available for $20 and can be purchased online at www.ShockLA.com. For further information, call (310) 368-2003 or email
