Opening July 11th
“...with the spray can, one avoids at once the whole traditional painterly cuisine, all the intermediaries... but the artist remained the absolute ruler (he was the one spraying, the lines were the result of his movement and those were the result of his will.)”
-Yve Alain Bois on Martin Barre
Okay Mountain is pleased to present “Cold End”, a solo exhibition by Colby Bird. The exhibition will focus on the theme of “honest work” through the use of photography, sculpture, and painting. In “Cold End”, Bird had created works that directly reference the artist’s studio practice and the “artist’s gesture” as a method of situating oneself on the continuum of global commerce and class. Modes of commerce and their role in the defining of social strata are prominent themes in Bird’s work, from street level drug trafficking to middle class manual labor to fine-art dealing.
Colby Bird is represented by CRG Gallery in New York. He is included in numerous private collections as well as a number of public collections including The Whitney Museum of American Art. He will be participating in the exhibition “Contemporary Culture” in September at Lora Reynolds Gallery in Austin, and an exhibition at the PatinoMuseum, Santa Cruz, Bolivia. He received his MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2004.
