Cogswell College Lecture Series: Jessica Coates speaks on "Creative Commons Licenses - What, how, and why you should care" April 18, 2012

Creative Commons is a non-profit that launched in 2002 with the aim of introducing greater flexibility to the the copyright system and encouraging sharing of creative material in the online environment. It is, in its heart, just a copyright licensing system, but its practical impact on creativity in the digital age has been great. By providing alternatives to the "can't touch this" default of traditional "all rights reserved" copyright, Creative Commons opens up the legal, creative, and business choices for those working with online content. Whether you are a creator, remixer, innovator, educator, or entrepreneur, this talk will explain how Creative Commons provides practical and legal solutions to your everyday copyright issues, and why it is a useful tool to have in your digital creativity arsenal.

Jessica Coates is the Affiliate Network Coordinator of Creative Commons. This international non-profit develops, supports, and stewards legal and technical tools that help creators to share copyright material, enabling its legal reuse as part of a digital commons. By doing so it aims to maximize digital creativity and innovation and thereby realize the full potential of the Internet - universal access to research and education and full participation in culture.

Prior to joining Creative Commons, Jessica spent more than a decade as a copyright adviser and community manager in Australia. In that time she has worked as an adviser for Australia's commercial television industry, a policy officer with the Australian government, a researcher at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Innovation at Queensland University of Technology, and as the Project Manager of Creative Commons Australia. Jessuca has a Master of Laws from the University of Melbourne and a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts (English Hons) from the Australian National University.
