On May 22 from 5 a.m. to midnight, the LA Tri Club and SCAQ (Southern California Aquatics Swim Club) have teamed up to promote water safety and raise funds for a free swim instruction program that will benefit underprivileged children in the Los Angeles area. The Coast to Coast Swim Challenge will take place at the Culver City Plunge and will include a day of fun, food and excitement all geared toward a good cause.
As Angelenos, we are fortunate to live in an area with great access to pools and the ocean, yet the region's drowning statistics for children are truly frightening. Drowning surpasses all other causes of death among children age 14 and under in California, while Los Angeles County has by far the highest rate of near-drowning of any county in the state.
Our efforts will include an attempt to set a new World Record for the most miles swum by a group in a single pool in one day. We plan to bring together athletes of from local high school and college teams, as well as friends and family, to collectively swim 2,462 miles -- the point-to-point distance from Los Angeles to New York. Celebrities, professional athletes and former Olympians will be attending the event so we are encouraging participants to sign up early to reserve a time slot.
Entry prices are as follows:
30-minute swim ONE STAGE $25
60-minute swim TWO STAGES $35
90-minute swim THREE STAGES $45
Launchers & Closers (5 - 8 a.m. or 9 p.m. - midnight) $65
