LEAH ROSENBERG
About Rounds
Curated by Brianna Toth
Leah Rosenberg’s paintings are time and process-based works that combine elements of layering, systems of accrual, and color. By allowing and encouraging the build up of paint to act in a three-dimensional manner, the medium begins to take on its own sculptural shape and functions as a means by which to mark the passage of time.
Rosenberg’s selection of color is based on personal systems that can be derived from the text of a book she is reading, a telephone call home to Saskatchewan, or the colors of the clothing worn by people who visit her studio throughout that day. Each piece is a concentration of many “paintings" – "paintings" here understood as a gerund: a series of consecutively painted actions.
About Rounds demonstrates Rosenberg's use of rhythm and layering, and combines that process with site-specific elements. Her incorporation of the two mirrors already existing in the space emphasize the cyclical nature of her creative process and physical work: by reflecting her paintings on top of one another, she adds yet another visual layer to her panels, which are already lathered in paint.
