CLOAK/DAGGER (RVA/Jade Tree)
These guys serve up a brutal minimalist update on the sick, blistering hardcore of the ’80s in the style of early Black Flag, Swiz, and Gorilla Biscuits, combined with the guitar-driven rock of Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes. Barking vocals, churning guitars, and no song over three minutes; total ADD punk!

PSYCHED TO DIE (New Brunswick, NJ)
Brand-new hardcore band from the ashes of the much-loved Ergs and their poppy compatriots, For Science! Total, aggravated, circle-pit-inducing thrash with fury and desperation bleeding from every track on their demo. When I listen to this band, coherence flees and my heart wants to explode!

YOUNG HEARTS (Brooklyn)
This phenomenal band takes just a couple steps away from hardcore to deliver a totally new kind of pop-punk: melodically intense and ferociously emotional, with gutted vocals and a barely suppressed rage atypical of the genre. Not to be missed!

USED KIDS (Brooklyn)
Whether they’re playing a beer-soaked basement or the dark confines of a Greenpoint bar, Used Kids’ upbeat folky punk sounds like it’s being broadcast live from a post-threshing wheat field, late afternoon: sun going down, haze in the air, beer in coolers, bonfire in an old clawfoot bathtub.

POLLUTION (Brooklyn)
Brooklyn’s screaming! Wasted thrash from these lords of destruction veers from slow and ugly to ripping and shredding in the blink of a thousand-eyed “Fly Upon the Garbage.”
