June 13, 2012 from 12:15pm – 12:45pm at Baine's Books and Coffee. Admission is free. Every second Wednesday of the month, the Museum of the Confederacy and the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park are partnering to bring the Civil War Sesquicentennial to Appomattox. Appomattox's own Joel Sweeney learned the banjo from local African-Americans and became one of the first white men to play the instrument on stage. Sweeney toured the East Coast and eventually Europe and was an important part of the popularization of banjo music. Join David Wooldridge, Museum Technician at the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park for a talk on Joel Sweeney. For more information, call 855-649-1861 x204.
