Civil War and Emancipation Day
The 150th Anniversaries
The American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar in partnership with the Future of Richmond’s Past will offer a full day of free activities for the public. With the dual 150th commemorations of the beginning of the Civil War in 1861 and the end of slavery in 1865, 2011-2015 will offer residents a variety of programs, lectures, and special events to remind residents and visitors alike that these pivotal historic events continue to have a lasting impact on our lives today.

Our nation will soon commemorate the 150th anniversaries of two of the major events in American history: the Civil War and the end of American slavery.

These anniversaries offer Richmond a unique opportunity as well as a special responsibility. As the former capital of the Confederacy and as a center of the nation’s slave trade, our city can help Americans better understand our shared history.
