Richard Ford was born in Jackson, Mississippi, the son of a traveling salesman. He is the highly-praised author of novels and short fiction, notably the Frank Bascombe novels The Sportswriter, Independence Day, The Lay of the Land, and the widely-anthologized story collection Rock Springs.
Ford, whose novel Independence Day was the first to win both the Pulitzer Prize and the PEN/Faulkner Award in 1995, is associated with the "Dirty Realism" literary movement. His most recent book, The Lay of the Land, finds Ford's everyman Frank Bascombe contending with ill-health, family, and self-reflection in the wake of the 2000 Presidential election. Coaxing revelations from everyday life, Ford completes the story of one of America's most memorable characters.
