Cities and climate change May 6, 2009

Hosted by SURF and sponsored by the ESRC and Smart City Futures, in conjunction with the ESRC Urban Transitions project, this debate will ask whether city-regions can manage system changes - like decentralised energy, the retrofitting of homes and buildings, building low carbon transportation and social change - that might curb climate change.

We invite policy makers, practitioners, researchers and business leaders to join us in debating whether city-regions can effectively develop the knowledge, expertise and capacity to manage 'systemic' responses to climate change.

We will be joined by a panel of three international experts:

* Anthony Bigio, Senior Urban Specialist,World Bank.
* Jan Corfee-Morlet, Environment Directorate OECD.
* Adrian Smith, Research Fellow SPRU.

Each has experience in understanding both the limits and opportunities for cities to respond strategically and systemically to climate change using examples from the global south and
the north.

Following a five minute talk by each panel member, chaired by Professor Tim May from SURF, we will invite audience participation and debate on the key issues and ways forward.
