SF Performances presents baritone Christopher Maltman and pianist Malcolm Martineau bringing a poetic program of Venetian gondoliers and romantic Mahler Friday, March 18, 8 p.m. at the Herbst Theatre.
Last with SF Perfomances in 2007 (following his 2005 debut here), Maltman-an audience favorite in operas and recitals and acclaimed for his interpretation of Britten's Billy Budd-is joined by leading accompanist Martineau to present Faure's melodies of Venice, gondolier songs of Schumann, Schubert, Mendelssohn and Hahn, and passionate Lieder of Schubert and Mahler.
Maltman's recitals appeal with their drama and story-telling: "Maltman's rich colors made this concert a remarkable experience" (Neue Kultur), and he "is brilliant as an actor, conveying the finest lyrical emotion" (Sueddeutsche Zeitung). He and Martineau will present Faure's Venice song-cycle set to poems of Verlaine, Cinq Melodies de Venise, four gondolier's songs by Schubert, Mendelssohn and Hahn, as well as the Rckert Lieder of Schubert and Mahler.
This lush program, presented by two exceptional artists, mines the intimate moments and mini-dramas of the vocal recital. Tickets start at just $35. For more information, visit sfperformances.org or call 415.392.2545.
