Written and directed by Preston Sturges
When an office clerk (Dick Powell) receives a telegram falsely announcing him the winner of $25,000 in a slogan contest, he gets a promotion and the girl (Ellen Drew) and starts spending a lot of money he doesn't have. Meanwhile, a stubborn curmudgeon (William Demarest, a Sturges favorite) is preventing the contest judges from reaching the final, unanimous decision upon which Powell's fortunes depend. Sturges's second feature established his delicate feel for both human comedy and drama and his acutely satiric eye.
Panel discussion will follow.
