Taiko (drum) performer, Japanese folk dancer, composer and choreographer Michelle Fujii reveals elements of her personal artistic journey, motivations and family history in CHOKING. This performance weaves taiko, dance and video in a solo performance, and delves into Michelle's continual explorations to place "traditional" Japanese art within the present.
Musical and visual conversations between Michelle and found everyday objects that have defined her life such as obutsudan (Buddhist altar), electric fans, ningyo (Japanese dolls), and stuffed animals will reveal the intimate, honest, authentic moments that are often hidden behind closed doors.
The 2nd floor of IFCC will be transformed with installations that reflect the influences that have developed her identity as a 4th generation Japanese-American, a daughter, and granddaughter of incarcerated Japanese-Americans during World War II. The gallery space will be a part of an interactive experience for the 7:45 entry and will be open to all attendees after the performance.
Only 70 tickets are available per nightly show between the two entry times to ensure an intimate and unique experience.
