The San Diego Asian Film Foundation (SDAFF) is proud to announce its’ first quarterly screening of the year, the sentimental family drama, APART TOGETHER, directed by Wang Quan’an.
In 1949, members of the Nationalist Army fled to Taiwan after losing the mainland to the People's Republic of China. Like many soldiers, Liu Yansheng left a wife in China, and thought he was only temporarily staying in Taiwan. After realizing that for political reasons, he could never return home, Yansheng remarried. Decades later, when Taiwanese soldiers were finally permitted to visit the mainland, Yansheng takes the opportunity to visit his wife in Shanghai, only to discover that she now has a family of her own. APART TOGETHER is a bittersweet love story about sacrifice and second chances, and the poignancy of reunion. It was the opening night film of the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Best Screenplay award.
