"China Thinks Long-term, But Can It Relearn to Act Long-term?" - a talk by Orville Schell September 22, 2006

One-fifth of humanity--- 1.3 billion people. The oldest continuous civilization--- 6,000 years. The fastest moving economy--- 10% growth a year. And a singularly powerful, inscrutable government.

Everything China does these days has enormous consequences--- for global business, global politics, and global environment--- but no one can be sure what China will do next. Few observers combine a detailed perspective on China's history with detailed knowledge of its current wrenching transformations. Orville Schell is one who does.

Orville Schell is the author of nine books about China, including one that announced China's economic takeoff early--- TO GET RICH IS GLORIOUS (1984). His next book (2007) will be titled UNDERSTANDING CHINESE HISTORY. Since 1996 Schell has been an exceptionally influential Dean of the Graduate School of Journalism at UC Berkeley.
