Adapted from a short story by Maurine Dallas Watkins. A 1926 play by crime reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins, 'Chicago' is based on actual criminals and crimes that she had reported on. It was made into a Broadway musical by John Kander and Fred Ebb in 1975, and revived in 1996. 'Chicago' has been performed in severally languages in different countries around the world, and has been received with popular and critical acclaim. It tells the story of Roxie Hart, a chorus girl, who longs for her 15 minutes of fame - and finds it when she murders her lover. She not only avoids prison with the help of lawyer Billy Flynn, but uses the trial to propel herself to stardom along with another murderous chorus girl - Velma Kelly. A satire on the corruption in the administration of criminal justice in the U.S. of the 1920's and the concept of the celebrity criminal, 'Chicago' is a musical that combines the intrigue and scandal of the criminal world with the grace and theatrics of vaudeville. It was also made into a movie by Rob Marshall, starring Renee Zellweger, Cliff Saunders, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Richard Gere. It won six Oscars. Stagefright Productions premieres this musical to the city's theatre lovers. As part of The Hindu Theatre Festival, Chennai.
