Chestnut Hill College will host a summer teaching and curriculum development workshop conducted by the Great Books Foundation from Sunday, June 27 to June 30, 2010 at Chestnut Hill College. The College is located at 9601 Germantown Avenue in Philadelphia.
The four-day residential workshop was created for high school and college faculty interested in developing Socratic discussion programs and curricular units dealing with these vital issues. The workshop is specifically designed for teachers in the social sciences or those closely involved in service learning programs. The workshop will consist of seminars facilitated by experienced Great Books Foundation staff members and will make use of selections from the Foundation's highly acclaimed anthology, The Civically Engaged Reader. In addition, participants will learn the fundamentals of Shared Inquiry™, the Great Books Foundation's method of Socratic questioning.
The workshop will begin with check-in at Chestnut Hill College on the afternoon of June 27 and will run through late afternoon on June 30, with optional evening outings to museums and historic sites in Philadelphia. Participants are strongly encouraged to reside on campus, since a significant part of the learning experience will occur as conversations begun during formal sessions are continued during meals and in common areas.
