Author Vince Gallagher will present the lecture, “The True Cost of Low Prices: The Violence of Globalization” on Wednesday, December 2 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Social Room, Fournier Hall. The lecture is sponsored by Department of Religious Studies and Philosophy, and the Graduate Program in Holistic Spirituality at Chestnut Hill College.

Gallagher’s lecture will explain how low prices in the United States come at the expense of poor laborers in other countries and explore the topic of globalization. His presentation will look at programs of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank and there will be a discussion about slave labor and unregulated work environments.

Vince Gallagher is the author of The True Cost of Low Prices: The Violence of Globalization (Orbis Books, 2006) and Sowing Sacred Seeds (Romero Center Publications, 2010) and has worked in the field of worker injury and disease prevention for 40 years. He has consulted for the U.S. Department of Labor, the World Bank, major corporations and unions, as well as several United Nations agencies in the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean. He has evaluated hazardous working conditions in more than 1,500 workplaces in ten countries. Gallagher received his undergraduate degree in economics from LaSalle University and holds a master’s degree in occupational safety and health from New York University.
