The Cherwell Singers presents a programme of French Catholic music from the
late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries on Saturday March 26th in
Exeter College Chapel. The major work is the Messe Solennelle of Louis Vierne
(1870-1937) who spent most of his career as organist of Notre-Dame Cathedral
in Paris. Also represented are motets by fellow Parisian organist composers
Dupre and Durufle as well as the well known "Panis Angelicus" by Cesar
Franck.
To complement the choral works there will be organ solos by Vierne
and Durufle played by Steven Grahl the assistant organist of New College.
The setting of Exeter College Chapel is entirely appropriate for the
programme as it is heavily influenced in style by the Gothic Sainte-Chapelle
in Paris and built during the Gothic revival of the nineteenth century. The
organ, which is a crucial element in the performance, is similarly heavily
influenced by the French nineteenth century tradition.
Do join us for this evening of devotional music from Paris.
