Garrett Ammon, Choreographer / Mark Allen Henderson, Sculptor
Garrett Ammon began his tenure as Artistic Director of Ballet Nouveau Colorado in 2007. Since that time, BNC has garnered national attention and praise for its innovative work, including being featured in Dance Magazine's 25 to Watch (2009). “Adventuring into this project with Mark Allen Henderson has been a delight. Exploring ideas with him and bringing his beautiful sculptures to life continues to reveal new possibilities every day. I feel very fortunate to have forged this new bond with a fellow artist, I am certain discoveries from this friendship will continue well into the future.”
Artist Mark Allen Henderson says that while he has previously worked with musicians, this project has offered him a new perspective. “Working with Garrett has opened doors to my imagination and given me the chance to explore an alternate process of expression. The neat thing is that we grasp each other’s emotions in art. This was evident from the moment we met.”
Alex Ketley, Choreographer / Mark Sink, Photographer
Alex Ketley won an Isadora Duncan Award for Best Ensemble Performance in 2008 for his work "To Color Me Different" and was considered a “Top Ten Performance of the Year” by both Voice of Dance and the San Francisco Chronicle. “I feel like when work is really strong it is the result and reflection of the relationships in the process, in this case the dancers and my collaborator the photographer Mark Sink. I love that this project is bringing together different artists and audiences from different disciplines."
Photographer Mark Sink said that he has collaborated with other visual artists and musicians in terms of "Live Paintings" but not dance. “In talking with Garrett and watching BNC rehearsals, the creative process is the same. The end result, however, is more like a journey and a shared experience for the audience. I'm excited to have some of my art move in space, breathe life and become an entity of its own through this collaboration. It has opened doors to my imagination and given me the chance to explore an alternate process of expression.”
Sarah Tallman, Choreographer / Laura Merage, Sculptor
Sarah Tallman holds a BA with honors in Dance Performance and Choreography from the University of Northern Colorado, where she was the two-time recipient of Dancer of the Year. Shas choreographed with BNC for 5 years has enjoyed the process of self exploration this piece has exposed. This piece reflects on humanity and how people see themselves and their emotions even when looking at others.
Laura Merage says that the juxtapositions and ironies of life intrigue her. “Since both our works portray human feelings, the fit was natural. Dancing bodies coming together with two-dimensional art full of raw emotions can be quite striking and moving. It has been a joy to work with Sarah and the process has gone very smoothly. I know the audience will feel the power of two artists coming together to make magic.”
In addition to the stage presentations on November 5 - 14, Chasing the Sublime - a shared experience in art also includes a gallery exhibit in the LCC North Gallery that continues through November 14 and features work by the artists. Several community events will take place leading up to the performances including An Inside View, a free public discussion by the choreographers, artists and staff speaking about their experiences during the creative process. An Inside View will be held on October 22 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the LCC lobby.
