Gallery 16 is pleased to unveil the latest byproducts of Charles Linder's artistic adventures. Proof that the destination for true pilgrims is traveling itself, Linder's work takes us on a visually meandering, tour de farce through no particular place at all. If Linder is still learning ( aun aprendo ), then this show is like a giant three dimensional blackboard of the inside of his head.
The centerpiece of the show is a totally, bullet-riddled 1965 mustang which has been transformed from abandoned desert target to gleaming gallery stallion. In making the mythic voyage from desert to city, the car undergoes a kind of semantic Gimp My Ride transition which highlights Linder's fascination with the collision of rural and urban. Linder's first car as a teenager was a blue, 1965 mustang that he restored himself.
Linder has stolen a 5 x 11 foot Viacom billboard off of the street, turned it on its edge and put his own art inside. Crossing the chasm of space between idea and finished product, the rearing horse image could very well be Linder himself, chomping at the bit to break free the corral of definition surrounding his public perception. Is he an untamable rager or a simply a gift horse looked in the mouth? The image was taken by Linder in front of the now defunct Roy Rogers and Dale Evans museum near San Bernardino.
The show will offer other small paintings and objects of Linder's as well as new neon texts. As tableau vivant, the show illustrates a narrative which runs through all of the work, one that is made complete by the audience on the night of the opening.
