Channels: Stories from the Niagara Frontier is Squeaky Wheel’s production initiative that connects area filmmakers with activist and community groups to make short documentaries about social justice issues impacting our region. After the screening, filmmakers and representatives from each participating group will be on hand to address audience questions and comments. This year's projects include:
NOT WITHOUT US by Mental Health PEER Connection + Sam Avery - a film deconstructing the complex issues at the heart of one of the most harmful and prevalent forms of discrimination in America - the chronic abuse and stigmatization of people labeled mentally ill.
ROOTED by Buffalo First + Kyle Toth - a depiction of Buffalo as a "local living economy" focusing on the importance of local and community ownership, diversity, place-making, environmental and social implications of our business and cultural practices, and smart civic planning.
THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN HERE by Erie County Fair Housing Partnership + Brian Milbrand - this film explores Buffalo's history of racial segregation and its activist challengers. It argues that segregation was created and sustained by human decisions and hard work and can be unmade the same way.
