The CFI Service Committee is hosting a Cell Phones for Soldiers Collection and Recycle Drive. Bring your old cell phones, working or not, to one of our collection sights. Phones will be responsibly recycled and turned into calling cards for our overseas soldiers.
To a military family, a phone call home is priceless. The Armed Forces Services Exchange operates telephone call centers in Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan, and other countries and aboard ships – anywhere service members are deployed. But these phone calls are expensive. A phone call from overseas can cost $7 to $8 per minute. Cell Phones for Soldiers addresses an everyday emotional need that everyone has experienced: the imperative to phone home, to hear a familiar voice while far away.
Cell Phones for Soldiers turns old cell phones into prepaid calling cards for U.S. troops stationed overseas. The phones are sent to ReCellular, a recycling company, which pays Cell Phones for Soldiers for each donated phone – enough to provide an hour of talk time to soldiers abroad.
By donating your used cell phones you not only help a soldier stay connected with his or her family, but you also keep the cell phones and many dangerous chemicals out of our landfills. To clear any personal data from your old cell phones follow this link to Cell Phone Data Eraser.
Cell phones will be collected at all CFI events throughout Michigan until the end of March. Donations can also be brought to the CFI office (3777 44th Street) until March 31, 2011. There is a donation box at the CFI office in the South Vestibule (facing 44th St.) that is accessible anytime. Check back for information on other drop-off locations.
