Cape Verde vocalist, Cesaria Evora, has cultivated an international audience while popularizing her island's most distinctive musical genre, morna? a slow mournful ballad form similar to Portuguese fado infused with a graceful African flavour. She has become one of the superstars of African music? a global celebrity, often compared to icons like Billie Holiday and Edith Piaf? with an ability to evoke the melancholy of the blues.
